In the process of establishing The Art Place in Miami’s Wynwood Art District, I started to notice the passerbys. At the time of my arrival I found lingering rumors of violence spread throughout the community. However, in getting to know the locals I began receiving a warm welcome. Some of the passerbys began offering to help me on occasion, promptly followed by the question “can I have a buck man?” I began noticing that many of them in the end have the same intention, to ask you for a buck. Instead of a single buck, I asked them to allow me to take their pictures in exchange for a few bucks. Most agreed some did not; those who did explained to me that they were a part of Wynwood too. Most were concerned with being ignored and displaced from the new community developing in Wynwood. While listening to their concerns it occurred to me to dedicate an exhibition to some of the true locals of Wynwood, The Buckman. Coincidentally, this is how they now refer to me, Mr. Buckman.

Donna E. Natale Planas and Alexia Fodere’s passion for photojournalism brought them together while working for the Miami Herald. Photovision is a reflection of their friendship. Alexia Fodere transformed 80’s TV sets into art by using photographs taken by well known photojournalist Donna E. Natale Planas during that same decade. The photographs are of Miami Vice, Grand Prix, drug busts and more from these unique times in Miami. In a conversation with Alexia we discovered that a clear and powerful connection exists between our work. We understand that the exhibition talks about Miami, past and present. It is a review of the evolution of Miami and the Wynwood Art District, which has transformed quickly in the last three years. Photovision and The Buckman Series are pieces well worth being seen. The opening reception will be January, Friday the 13th at 6PM at The Art Place, 2722 NW 2nd Ave. Miami, Florida 33127 Wynwood Art District.
